do we need a label?
March 7, 2008
how often do you get asked by friends, work colleagues, the government census or whatever, “what’s your religion/faith?”
when it comes to our spiritual path, do we really need a label? as a songwriter i have been asked numerous times, “so what style are you?” - i always struggle to answer because while it might serve the marketeers, such labels limits the artist and say very little about their work.
i have reached the point where calling myself a “christian” holds little meaning for me. owning that label might reassure those concerned christians within my circle who would otherwise be worried about my salvation - i don’t take their concern lightly by the way - but it says virtually zero about me, the spiritual being currently undergoing a physical experience.
some people who call themselves “christian” also hate jews, revile homosexuals, do 1000 press-ups every morning, drink whisky, hug everyone they meet, only drink freshly ground coffee, denounce alcohol, hunger for armageddon, abstain from sex, believe in open marriage…yada yada yada.
all of the above, by calling themselves “christian”, would claim to be following the example of Christ and adhering to the bible, as they understand it.
currently i like the phrase, “christian - currently uninstalling”. after several decades of wrestling & searching primarily within the christian framework, i feel a growing desire to step out from under the “christian” tag altogether and embrace my ecumenical & eclectic nature.

1. Christ said, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father”.
therefore: character of Christ = character of G-d the Father.
2. G-d the Father never changes in character - according to various scriptures.
therefore: character of G-d the Father = character of Christ, throughout spacetime.
3. Christ condemned stoning and other such acts, teaching mercy & non-judgement.
therefore: G-d the Father must condemn stoning and other such acts, teaching mercy & non-judgement.
BUT:
4. According to the first testament, G-d orders the stoning of rebellious children and genocide of entire tribes, including innocent children, women and livestock.
therefore:
1. G-d’s character has not remained constant through spacetime.
or
2. G-d is schizophrenic.
or
3. the barbaric acts claimed to be either condoned or ordered by G-d in the first testament are nothing of the sort - but rather projections of ego onto G-d, fabricated spiritual justification, fabrications & lies etc.
something has to give.

quantum coffee…
February 21, 2008
about 10 years ago i sat at the waterfront mug & bean cafe in cape town, reading a paper. this guy sat down next to me at the counter and we eventually got talking. by the time i left, he had turned me on to the wonderwacky world of quantum physics. i couldn’t wait to get to cape town library, where he said i could find a copy of Capra’s tao of physics.
V had spent the last 3 years living out of his beaten up car, between cape technicon and the oriental bazaar. although homeless, he had talked the tech library into letting him frequent it and over the following years had gorged his considerable intellect on mathematics, fuzzy logic, quantum physics, set theory, electronics etc.
although located 6000 miles north of him in 3D, we still keep in contact. while often homeless in this one, i have no doubt that in an alternate universe V received a scholarship to study at MIT and went on to become a renowned leftfield polymath.
he had a real impact on me back then, which continues.
for anyone interested in exploring the new physics, the following books offer an accessable & enjoyable starting point:
Nic Herbert - Quantum Reality
Fritjof Capra - The Tao of Physics
Dancing Wu Li Masters - Gary Zukav
